What Does A Wellness Coach Do Exactly?

Wellness coaching is a process that facilitates sustainable change in behavior by tapping into your unique strengths and resources, and helping you transform dreams and desires into achievable goals through taking action.  Wellness coaching utilizes methods of motivational interviewing, positive psychology, solution-focused approach, the transtheoretical model of change, structured journaling & mindfulness exercises.

Wellness Coaching helps people define goals that are important to them and gets them from where they are to where they want to be. The purpose of wellness coaching is to help people explore their own desires, ability, reasons, and needs for making changes in their lives, and then take massive action to make and sustain those changes.

It is well established that sustained change comes from within a person.

All change is really self-change.

Imposing solutions on people may deliver some temporary benefit, but sustained change won’t happen unless the person “owns” the process of change.  This is why we recommend joining our program for one year or more so that you have time to encounter and overcome obstacles while working with a personal coach.  Your brain is set up to repeat patterns for efficiency.  When you take steps to change these patterns, you will encounter a resistance from your habitual brain telling you to go back to doing what you've always done.  I will guide you during these times back to your compelling reason for wanting to change in the first place.  This will encourage you to keep your eyes on your vision for the future instead of repeating old patterns.

Wellness Coaches use an approach that is person-centered, relationship-focused, and strength-based.  This means that you are in the driver’s seat making your own decisions about what works and fits for you. It’s relationship-focused because I am your partner in the change process.  I will be a trusted guide to help you make the changes you want.  One Life focuses on the skills, strengths, and resources a person already has, what they’ve already been able to achieve, and the skills they want to develop. It’s not about blame, deficits, or mistakes from the past.  This is not a past focused program, but a future focused program.

Wellness Coaches recognize and build on even the smallest successes because that’s the fuel that nurtures change.  We call this "personal wins." which I ask my clients for every week.  When change is done this way, people not only enjoy the benefits of the change, but they develop confidence and a lasting ability to finish what they start in all areas of their lives.
