Tap into a Coconut

It is my mission to help you add one piece of fruit to your day. Today, I am excited to talk about this amazing fruit, the coconut & it’s juice! Coconut juice is the actual juice that is inside the hairy, hard shell fruit. This is not to be confused with coconut milk. Coconut milk is the combination of coconut juice and the white coconut meat blended together.

With high heat and summertime activities this is the perfect hydration drink. Coconut juice has been touted as being better than water after an outdoor activity. This is due to the carbohydrate (essential for proper brain function) and electrolyte content. The juice contains Magnesium, Potassium, Calcium, and sodium which are the main properties of any electrolyte beverage on the market. It’s great for during and after strenuous activity.

One cup of coconut juice contains 46 calories, along with:

Carbs: 9 grams // Fiber: 3 grams // Protein: 2 grams // Vitamin C // Magnesium // Potassium // Sodium and Calcium

This is my go-to drink before and after my rides & runs lately, it’s been so hot!

If you want to buy coconut juice premade, not every brand is equal, nor does every brand taste the same. Every manufacturer has their own unique blend and taste. If you’re searching the shelves, look for one with the least number of additives. Experiment with brands and flavors.

If your super adventurous and want to make it yourself using an all-natural coconut, here are some pointers.

· Use a screwdriver or drill and tap a hole into one of the 3 black spots or eyes to drain the juice.

· A small coconut contains 1/4 cup of juice and a large coconut may contain 1/2-3/4 cup of juice.

· Once the juice is drained, crack the shell in pieces and store in a zip lock baggy in the refrigerator. (I made the mistake of storing it in the pantry once, never again. It breaks down at room temperature & it’s awful)

· Grate the fresh coconut meat (the white part) on yogurt, acai bowls, oatmeal or bake with it.

Enjoy a glass of cold, refreshing coconut juice and let me know what you think!

Cheers to healthy living!
