I love the Ugh with tracking food.
Let us imagine for a moment….we drive up to the gas pump to fill up. We trust in that moment that we are getting the quality of gasoline that we’ve chosen when we hit the grade button. How do we know that what we’re pumping in our car is really high octane? We never actually see the product and honestly, I have to believe most of us have no idea of the chemical makeup or quality of gasoline going into our vehicle.
Same runs true for our nutrition. Most of us consume food throughout the day without knowing what we are actually consuming. Most of the time, our intention is only to fill up our bellies so we feel full. To do this, we carry out an action of “consuming” multiple times a day, randomly, while trying to achieve our fitness goals. Simply, most of us eat to get full and we don’t always connect it with fueling our bodies properly.
I love to ask my clients about logging their food. The first response I usually receive is an ugh! or a sigh. Believe me, I get it. When I first started to log my food, I had the same reaction. I've been an athlete for nearly 30 years, I figured I don’t’ need to log because I already know what I'm doing. What I realized after tracking for a week or so is that I was eating a lot of “non fuel” foods. My eyes were opened to my food intake and it has been an absolute game changer in my life!
Many of my clients can relate! We just go through the motions. When we track our food, we can determine if what we’re eating is moving us toward our goal or away from it. When we consume nutritious foods, it burns clean in our bodies so we not only achieve our fitness and nutrition goals but see the maximum results we are working so hard for.
The American Heart Association Says this in regards to tracking nutrition:
"You can identify your good habits (such as eating three daily meals and choosing healthy snacks) and your bad habits (such as unhealthy snacking late at night and drinking mostly sugary drinks)."
Think this seems like a lot of work? It’s not, because tracking your nutrition becomes a habit over time. What you currently consume nutrition wise is also a habit. Probably one that you learned years ago. Once we can identify the habits through your tracking, we can make tweaks to change old habits.
One of my mantras as a coach is "Tweak don't Overhaul." You can’t lose all your fat in one workout and you can’t build an entirely new diet in one meal.
Friends, tracking your nutrition is not easy the first or second day. The reality is that nothing life changing is easy at first. That is why you need a coach, someone to set up a plan for you, give you a path to walk on, and help encourage you throughout the process. I would love to be your coach.
