Acai Bowl Crazy

I get tongue twisted when I talk about acai bowls because they are that good! I was first introduced to these funny named bowls at a group run with Jesse Itzler. The amazing staff handed these out for recovery after the run. It's cold, made from fruit and tastes delicious. My family is totally hooked!

The Acai (pronounced ah-sah-EE) berry has been termed a superfood. It is packed with fiber, antioxidants, micronutrients, vitamin C, magnesium and potassium.

You find acai in the frozen section of your grocery store near the frozen fruit & smoothie ingredients. They usually come 6 - 8 servings per bag. You thaw out a pack and then blend it with frozen bananas, frozen fruit of your choice & unsweetened vanilla almond milk to make a thick frozen berry mixture.

You can find Acai Bowls at most smoothie locations, but we like to make them at home. This gives me an excuse to use my Ninja professional series blender and lay out all the good toppings on the kitchen counter. We like to add fresh fruit, honey, coconut, granola & chocolate chips. You can find so many variations & recipes online.

These have become a regular for my family for breakfast, post workout meal or an evening snack. Understand that the acai base is healthy because it's all fruit + unsweetened almond milk but that can be compromised if you aren't watching the quantity and quality of the toppings you are adding.

Our favorite place in Atlanta for acai bowls is off the Atlanta Beltline near the Krog Street Market called Playa Bowls. They offer a variety of different bases and bowls to test and try.
